7 Korean cancer hospitals ranked in the Top 100 of 'World's Best Cancer Hospitals in 2023' by Newsweek

Cancer is one of the most lethal diseases worldwide. According to CNN report, there were about 19.3 million cancer patients worldwide in 2020, and 10 million of them lost their lives to cancer.

The World Health Organization(WHO) predicts that the number of people diagnosed with cancer will continue to increase over the next few years, and in this situation, many cancer patients around the world are visiting cancer hospitals with excellent medical technology for cancer treatment.

Meanwhile, according to a survey by Newsweek, an American current affairs weekly magazine, Korea’s cancer hospitals are drawing attention as they were selected as two in the top 10 and seven in the top 100 in the ranking of ‘World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2023 – Oncology’.

1. Samsung Medical Center - 6th

In January 2008, Samsung Medical Center opened the first cancer center in Korea, an intensive cancer treatment facility with 11 floors above ground and 8 floors below ground, with 700 beds.

From 2008 to 2019, a total of 239,405 cancer patients visited Samsung Seoul Hospital, and since 2013, more than 20,000 cancer patients have visited Samsung Seoul Hospital.

2. Seoul Asan Medical Center - 7th

Seoul Asan Medical Center opened a cancer hospital with an integrated cancer treatment system in June 2006.

As of 2020, the cumulative number of cancer patients in hospitals exceeded 1 million, making it the hospital that received the most cancer patients in Korea, and was ranked No.1 domestic cancer hospital (No.5 and No.7 in the world, respectively) by Newsweek for consecutive years in 2020 and 2021.

Seoul Asan Medical Center treats various cancers such as lung cancer, stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, head and neck cancer, gynecological cancer, biliary tract and pancreatic cancer, urinary cancer, blood cancer/bone marrow transplantation, sarcoma rare cancer, brain tumor, and skin cancer.

3. Seoul National University Hospital - 15th

Seoul National University Hospital opened a cancer hospital in March 2011. A total of 15 cancer centers and 12 integrated cancer centers, including liver cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, and colorectal cancer, cooperate organically to provide comprehensive and systematic cancer treatment services.

By 2021, a total of 600,000 cancer patients have visited Seoul National University Hospital. In particular, we operate not only domestically but also the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Royal Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, so we have excellent experience and data on international treatment.

4. The Catholic University of Korea - Seoul St. Mary's Hospital - 21th

The Catholic University of Korea - Seoul St. Mary's Hospital opened the Catholic Cancer Hospital in March 2009, but it has a long history of cancer treatment, having already opened the Catholic Medical Center cancer treatment clinic in 1978.

In particular, in 1985, we succeeded in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for the first time in Korea, and in 2018, the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center was separated from a cancer hospital and newly established as a blood hospital, so we have high expertise in this field.

5. Yonsei Cancer Hosptial(Severance Hospital) - 27th

Yonsei Cancer Hosptial(Severance Hospital) is the first cancer center established in Korea in 1969.

Yonsei Cancer Hospital operates not only representative cancer centers for liver cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, and esophageal cancer, but also the only high-level cancer surgery center in Korea.

In addition, Yonsei Cancer Hospital introduced a robotic surgery machine for the first time in Korea in 2005 and introduced robotic IMRT for radiation treatment for the first time in Asia in 2013, leading cancer treatment through cutting-edge technology.

6. National Cancer Center Korea - 35th

National Cancer Center Korea, which opened in 2001, is a government-funded institution established to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer in the Republic of Korea and improve the quality of life of cancer patients. It specializes in cancer research and treatment.

The National Cancer Center Korea operates specialized treatment centers with treatment centers for 11 diseases such as stomach cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, uterine cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer, which occur mainly in Korea, and 5 treatment centers for each function. Through this, we are treating not only Korean patients but also many international cancer patients.

7. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital - 72th

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital started treatment at the cancer center in June 2008. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital has cancer centers for liver cancer, thyroid cancer, geriatric cancer, biliary tract/pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, gynecological cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer.

In order to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital manages treatment and examination schedules through an exclusive cancer coordinator, and manages problems that may occur after discharge through the 'Acute Treatment Center'. We are implementing the program.
